On the way to Akureyri: short trip to Mývatn lake and Goðafoss falls in November

During last weekend of November I went for a trip to Akureyri, second biggest city in Iceland situated in the north coast. My close friends, Ola and Darek, were having lectures there and invited me and some other friends to join them, as they rented a big apartment.

I was in the car with other couple that I had never met before, Ania and Simone, quantum physicists working in Iceland and doing postdoc here. We set off around noon on Friday as they ere planing to take some pictures during the way. I don't have to tell you that was really enthusiastic about taking pictures too :)

Finally, because of the huge storm predictions, we came back on Saturday night just before big snow storm and hurricane, but managed to do one trip to Mývatn lake and Goðafoss fall during the day. It looked completely different then in summertime, more gloomy and surrealistic, incredible lava rocks ariund the lake looked like a settelment of some trolls or elves..

In Dimmuborgir, the dark city made of natural lava rock formations, close to the lake, we met 3 yule lads, vicious Icelandic santa clauses. There are 13 jóla lads, the 4th one was waving from a high rock. I got a hug from the one that you see on the first pictures. I was completely amazed with them, and there was a jóla market with Christmas food and souvenirs.. Christmas time is coming so early to Iceland. Te need for light, warmth and social meetings is so big that Icelander start to meet regularly for jóla parties since late November.. Jóla, jóla everywhere..
